I know ya'll want to shoot me for spamming ya'll journals, but Mardi Gras is tomorrow and I'm excited. But I found this article here for ya'll for the Mardi Gras song considering that I manage to jumble the words up real good.... ON A SIDE NOTE: The lyrics vary from town to town. In the other Mardi Gras song, they speak of wanting some gratons or cracklins and other stuff. I wish I had some Nathan Abshire songs for you to hear. His version of the Mardi Gras song is about as Original as you can get and it's damn good. I just love the beginning with the horses clomping and everything. So good.
The Basile Mardi Gras Song
Listening to Potic Rider's resonant voice leading the Basile Mardi Gras in their begging song is a truly memorable experience. On Mardi Gras day, the Mardi Gras gather about dawn at the Basile Town Park where they assemble under an open barn to hear instructions from Capitaine Potic Rider.
After undergoing the traditional search for weapons, they sing their song before they load up on trailers and begin their run. The excitement and enthusiasim of the Mardi Gras is obvious, even in this recording made with a small hand-held machine. If you come to watch the Mardi Gras depart, you need to be ready to reach for your pockets. Once the song is over, the Mardi Gras will surround you, begging insistently until you produce at least "cinq sous." And they'll return to beg again and again, despite the co-capitaines' efforts with their whips to keep the Mardi Gras under control. Capitaine Rider leads the Mardi Gras in their song at each stop during the courir.

The Basile Mardi Gras SongSung by Russell Potic Rider and the Basile Mardi Gras Capitaine, capitaine, voyage ton flag et hale ton camp.

Alright, I promise no more.
I'm so excited that I found these videos on youtube. I found one for the Basile Mardi Gras. Damn! But I'm not there so don't look for me. I hide from the Mardi Gras. I was traumatized as a child, so shoot me. -_- But here are some videos from Basile and the surrounding areas. Feel free to look around and get acquainted. Mwhahahahhahha
This year is especially going to be fun considering that we're the only town who does it traditionally and without parades and beads. We have people coming in from Germany and all over the world to view the Mardi Gras. XD
Well, okay then. I believe the video is in six or seven parts. But you can just click and view. It's all in good fun Mardi Gras. People come together from all over and just have fun. There's nothing too it.
Ahhhhhh, the Mardi Gras.
This is the Balfa Brothers singing the Mardi Gras song. I love this song. You guys just don't know. lol. This is the traditional Mardi Gras that goes way back before New Orleans turned it into a tourist attraction.
Here's how it works,
The Mardi Gras start early in the morning (yes, there's lots of drinking involved). They go from house to house collecting goods for the community gumbo like rice, meat, sausage, etc or money. If you give them something, they'll perform for you. They will sing you this song. The Mardi Gras song. But you have to be careful, some of them are bad. They will steal your shoes. But that's what the Captain is there for. He'll whip them for being bad with a rope or whip. Remember all of these people are in custom and mask so you can't tell who they are.
A fun tradition is the Chicken Run. Just imagine a bunch of drunk morons in customes chasing a poor chicken. lol. Such fun to watch. When the Mardi Gras are done with their rounds, everyone goes to the Main street and has a dance or fea do do (I hope I spelt that right). Afterwards, everyone goes to eat the gumbo with all the food the Mardi Gras collected. The whole community joins in. It's a lot of fun. You dance and be merry all night because come Ash Wednesday you have to be have yourself. lol :p
